Lagos Government Evacuates 310 Pilgrims from Jerusalem Amidst Israel Conflict

  • Following the unexpected attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel last Saturday morning, 310 residents of Lagos State were safely repatriated.

Israel, still grappling with the shock of an unprecedented attack by Hamas, which involved a multi-faceted assault by land, air, and sea. Some have compared it to the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

The death toll in Israel has climbed to over 900, and the response has been a relentless wave of strikes on Gaza, resulting in a death toll of 687 in that region.

In response to the escalating conflict, the Nigerian government had urged both nations to pursue a ceasefire. They expressed concerns that the ongoing escalation could lead to an unending cycle of suffering for civilian populations. The government advised restraint and prioritizing the safety of civilians in this challenging situation.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that 310 citizens that went on pilgrimage to Israel have been rescued.

In a tweet from his official account he said,

Good morning Lagos,
I’m happy to announce that we have successfully airlifted and returned all three hundred and ten (310) citizens who went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Israel.
I want to thank you all for your concern and I must also express my joy to our Ministry of Home Affairs for a job well done.
We pray for peace in Israel, and indeed the world at large
